Definition by University of Oxford : “plagiarism is presenting someone else’s work or ideas as your own, with or without their consent, by incorporating it into your work without full acknowledgement. All published and unpublished materials whether in manuscripts, printed or electronic form, is covered under this definition. Plagiarism maybe intentional or reckless, plagiarism is a disciplinary offense.”

Definition by UGC : Plagiarism means the practice of taking someone else’s work or idea and passing them as one’s own.
Regulations by UGC : University grant Commission (promotion of academic integrity and prevention of plagiarism in higher educational institutions ) regulations 2018. It was formed on 23rd July 2018 and published on UGC website on 7th August 2018.
These regulations are for students, Researchers, staff, faculty.

Level of plagiarism :
Level 0: similarity up to 10%
Level 1: similarity between 10% & 40%
Level 2: similarity between 40% & 60%
Level 3: similarity above 60%
Penalties : Plagiarism in submission of thesis and dissertations
Level 0 : minor similarities, no penalty.
Level 1 : such person is asked to submit revised script within a stipulated time period not exceeding six month.
Level 2 : such person shall be debarred from submitting a revised script for a period of one year.
Level 3 : such person’s registration for that program shall be cancelled.

Logarithm in academic and research publications
Level 0 : no penalty.
Level 1 : asked to withdraw manuscript.
Level 2 : (a)asked to withdraw manuscript,
(b)denied a right to come annual increment,
(c)not be allowed to be a supervisor to any new masters, M field, PhD, student/ scholar for two years.
Level 3 : (a)asked to withdraw manuscript,
(b)denied a right to come annual increment,
(c)not be allowed to be a supervisor to any new masters, M field, PhD, student/ scholar for three years.

Exclusion from plagiarism :
All quoted work reproduced with all necessary permission and/or attributes.
All references, bibliography, table of content, preface and acknowledgements.
All generic terms, laws, standard symbols and standard equations.
